Kenya is accelerating its transition to renewable energy, with plans to increase clean power generation to over 90% of the national grid within five years. The East African nation is leveraging its abundant geothermal resources and solar potential to lead the region’s clean energy transformation.

The Olkaria geothermal power station, located in the Great Rift Valley, has completed an expansion adding 83 megawatts of capacity. The facility now generates over 800 megawatts, providing stable and reliable clean electricity to Kenya’s national grid.
‘Kenya has rich geothermal resources, and we are fully utilizing this advantage,’ said Energy Minister Davis Chirchir. ‘Our target is to achieve 100% clean energy by 2030.’

Beyond geothermal, Kenya’s solar sector is expanding rapidly. The Garissa Solar Power Plant, one of East Africa’s largest solar projects, currently serves approximately 70,000 households.

This green transition not only helps Kenya meet international climate commitments but will also significantly reduce electricity costs, benefiting approximately 3 million rural residents.
