Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway Marks Five Years of Operations

Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is celebrating five years of operations, having transformed passenger and freight transport between Nairobi and Mombasa while generating significant economic benefits for the East African nation. The 472-kilometer railway, Kenya’s largest infrastructure project since independence, has carried over 25 million passengers and 6 million tons of cargo since its launch in 2017.

The railway has reduced travel time between the capital and the port city from 12 hours by road to just 4.5 hours, while cutting freight costs by approximately 40%. Passenger numbers have grown steadily, with the Madaraka Express service now operating 16 daily trips between the two cities.

‘Before the SGR, traveling to Mombasa meant enduring a long, tiring journey on the old highway,’ said John Kamau, a frequent traveler who works in Nairobi but has family at the coast. ‘Now I can leave Nairobi after work and have dinner with my parents in Mombasa the same evening.’

The cargo operations have been equally transformative. The Port of Mombasa has seen faster turnaround times for container ships, as cargo can now be moved inland much more efficiently. This has helped reduce congestion at the port and improved Kenya’s competitiveness as a regional logistics hub.

However, the project has not been without controversy. Construction costs of $3.2 billion were financed largely through loans from Chinese banks, raising concerns about debt sustainability. Opposition politicians have questioned whether the economic returns justify the debt burden.

The government maintains that the SGR has created over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and stimulated economic growth along the corridor. New industrial zones and logistics parks have sprung up near railway stations, attracting both local and foreign investment.

Plans to extend the railway to the Ugandan border at Malaba have stalled due to funding challenges and land acquisition issues. The government is now exploring public-private partnerships to finance the extension, which would connect the line to Uganda, Rwanda, and potentially South Sudan.

Environmental groups have raised concerns about the railway’s impact on wildlife, particularly the Nairobi National Park, which the line traverses. Special bridges and underpasses were constructed to allow animal movement, and wildlife monitoring programs report minimal disruption to migration patterns.
